Itchy After Showering? Here's Why…
Have you ever experienced the icky sensation of sandpapery, and itchy skin after taking a nice long shower? We feel you! But don't fret, we've got you covered with some easy tips to help you say goodbye to post-shower itchiness and hello to healthy, glowing and nourished skin.
Keep It Cool
We know how tempting it is to turn up the heat in the shower, but hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it feeling dry and itchy. Hot water can also cause the blood vessels in the skin to dilate, leading to redness and inflammation. If you have any existing skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, hot water can exacerbate these conditions, leading to increased discomfort and irritation. It's essential to avoid exposing your skin to excessively hot water to prevent damage and maintain healthy, hydrated skin. Let’s keep it lukewarm, shall we?

There's nothing worse than using a harsh soap or body wash that leaves your skin feeling irritated and itchy. So be sure to opt for gentle, hydrating products that won't strip your skin of its natural oils. Our tip? Look for products with natural, plant-based ingredients that soothe and nourish your skin. Sundae’s Cool Mint Whipped Shower Foam is a crowd favourite when stepping out of the shower feeling as chilled as a cucumber.
Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise!
Post shower or bath, remember to lock in moisture by slathering on a rich, hydrating moisturiser. Just be sure to choose products with natural ingredients like plant oils to provide deep hydration and nourishment for your skin without sensitising it further. We recommend you apply your moisturiser immediately after showering to help seal in moisture and leave your skin feeling baby soft. Keep it in the fridge for an extra-cool touch upon application.
After you've finished bathing, it's important to use an extra-gentle hand when drying off. Instead of vigorously rubbing your skin dry with a towel (as tempting as it is—we know!) pat it gently to help retain moisture. We also recommend considering a soft, microfibre towel over any rough fabrics that can aggravate sensitive skin further.
We all know that regular exfoliating can be great for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, but over-exfoliating can lead to itchy, irritated skin. Limit your exfoliation to once or twice a week and choose gentle, non-abrasive products like our Green Tea Whipped Shower Foam (packed with Finger Lime—which induces gentle skin exfoliation for smoother, brighter & even skin!) to avoid over-exfoliating. Trust us, your skin will thank you.

Drinking (and drinking, and drinking) plenty of water is essential for overall skin health, and it can also help prevent post-shower itchiness. When your body is dehydrated, your skin can become dry and itchy. By staying hydrated, you'll be helping your skin retain moisture and stay healthy and supple. So, for the love of your skin, keep that water bottle handy and sip your way to a more glowing dermis.
Check for Allergies
If you've tried all of these tips and are still experiencing itchy skin after a shower, you may have an allergy to one of your skincare products. Body skin allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to a substance that comes into contact with the skin, leading to a variety of symptoms such as redness, itching, and swelling. Common triggers of body skin allergies include certain types of fabrics, soaps, perfumes, and skincare products. We recommend switching to products formulated for sensitive skin to see if that helps. (Hint hint, all Sundae Body products are tested and suitable for sensitive and dry skin.) If you continue to experience itching or irritation, consult with a local friendly dermatologist, tout de suite!
Remember, taking care of your skin is an act of self-love and itchy skin after a shower doesn't have to be a part of your routine. Listen to your body, be gentle with your skin, and adjust your routine as needed to find what works best for you. By incorporating these simple tips into your daily skincare routine, you can say goodbye to the post-shower ick/itchiness and hello to healthy, glowing skin.
