Shower Gel vs. Body Wash: What's The Difference? | Sundae School | Sundae Body

So, What Exactly Distinguishes Shower Gel From Body Wash?

In all honesty, before the pandemic; we thought we had every fundamental personal hygiene practice down to the finest art – including washing our hands and taking a shower. But like most other things, the past few years have placed our essential everyday routines under a microscope. We were all shocked to learn from the celebrity-endorsed #safehands challenge that 20 seconds of hand-washing seems far longer than you may expect (like way, way longer). Other topics of covid-induced debate covered the sort of cleansers we should be reaching for daily to achieve our safest, most hygienic state of being.

There was also talk of self-injecting bleach, but TBQH –  we’re trying to forget about it!

Regarding shower hygiene, some of us are still a little befuddled over the difference between shower gels, washes, foams, and bars. Or, in the case of yours truly, whipped shower foams.

To put your beating hearts to rest, today, we're stepping up to define all the differences between body wash and shower gel so that you may achieve your desired level of squeaky clean every time you turn on the tap.

How Do Shower Gel and Body Wash Differ?

Contrary to **popular** belief, body wash and shower gel are not interchangeable terms. We know, we know, when you imagine the purpose of shower gel or body wash, you will receive the same response. And while you may cleanse your body with either of these products while taking a shower, it is their texture that differentiates them.

The viscosity (a fancy word for a thick, bouncy texture!) of shower gel is solid and gel-like – hence the name. Depending on the formulation, it can occasionally be used for both the body and the hair. Just picture your significant other’s questionable affiliation with 3,4,5-in-one products. Often, shower gels contain synthetic detergents derived from either petroleum or plant sources – so make sure you’re checking your labels and feel comfortable with what you see.

On the flip side, body wash has a thinner formula that resembles liquid soap and may have a dreamy, creamy consistency, which helps to provide your skin with an additional serving of hydration. Of course, these textures may vary because brands and products are continually updated and infused with new ingredients that complement various skin types. Consider what your precious epidermis desires and what bodycare outcome you're seeking to determine whether you choose shower gel or body wash.

Sundae Body proudly identifies as a shower foam, meaning our products contain all the soothing and cleansing properties of a body wash – whipped into a luxurious, frosting-like foam. One of the many reasons we like our foams is that they froth and lather straight onto our bodies without the need for harsh lathering and rubbing.

How To Get The Most Bang Out Of Your Shower Gel Or Body Wash

As we said earlier, we get that there is nothing new or revolutionary about using a wash or gel to clean your body in the shower. However, when it comes to caring for your skin and keeping body blemishes and redness at bay, there are more ways than ever to get the job done. New recipes, products, textures, and general bathing tricks are constantly popping up on our radar, and on our Instagram feeds. In order to demystify, here are a few things to consider when planning out your next shower, and making a body wash selection at your local chemist or skincare store.

Select Your Cleaning Tools Wisely

Using abrasive loofahs and brushes can be a no-go zone if you have sensitive skin, even if their exfoliation abilities appeal. Honestly, we think that using your own humble hands is the most practical and cost-effective method of applying body wash or shower gel. Simply press a dollop of your selected product onto the palms of your wet hands as you're in the shower. Lather up a little by rubbing your hands together, then continue as usual by massaging all the critical areas. It might be simple, but it’s a surefire way to avoid utilising grating or bacteria-ridden items that can irritate your skin. Your skin shouldn't ever feel raw or look red after washing.

Consider Your Environment and Climate

Paying attention to your skin's best interests start with examining the environment it exists in. If you live in a humid, warm climate, daily showers sound like a good way to look after yourself. If you live in a dry, arid climate, ensure your products are moisturising and restorative to preserve skin health.

Pay Attention To Those Pesky Sensitive Areas

If you have temperamental skin (who doesn't?) or patches of sensitivity on your body, we suggest a gentle shower routine that avoids harsh chemicals and a steamy water temperature (if you're brave enough why not try a cold shower!) Don’t forget to stop by the post-shower hydration station and slather on your favourite moisturiser while your skin’s still a little damp, as it aids in sealing in moisture.
